]]> This may not be as extensive as Project Guttenburg, but it looks like it will be easier to find what is here. First of all, they list books by author.

Among them are: Louisa May Alcott, Dante Alighieri, Hans Christian Andersen, Jane Austen, William Blake, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lewis Carroll, Agatha Christie, Stephen Crane, Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Frost, Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, Jules Verne and several more authors that you learned about in school.

Additionally, check the links at the bottom of the home page. There is a link to a list of online coupons.

IMHO - Meeting Topics tag:www.ugnn.com,2008://1.1308 2008-05-03T03:45:03Z 2008-05-03T03:57:20Z I have found that I need to learn new ways to cope with the user groups issues now that Cowtown MUG has shrunk in size. Lynn Wegley http://www.ugnn.com/ I have found that I need to learn new ways to cope with the user groups issues now that Cowtown MUG has shrunk in size.

]]> Our first issue was getting a less expensive meeting location. Currently we are meeting at an Apple VAR in Fort Worth. That saves us $50 per month we were paying for a meeting site for most of the last 15 years or so.

The next issue was to find new ways to promote the group. I believe I have found a way to get our name into the local newspaper on a monthly basis in their calendar.

The next issue is a recurrent one. What do we have for meeting topics. One of our club founders was an Apple Genius for several months. He currently is doing a series on trouble shooting Leopard.

We have been asked to do meetings on iPhoto, Safari vs Firefox and others that members can present. I am wondering what you are doing for your meetings. I don't think we can provide a large enough audience for vendors since we rarely have more than 20 in attendance.

Again, please let me now what you are doing.

Thanks
Lynn

Lynn Wegley http://www.ugnn.com/ Most applications for the Macintosh currently are shipped as Universal apps. This means that they contain code to allow us to run them either on PowerPC machines or on Intel machines.

Xslimmer will delete unneeded code as one way to get back space on your hard drive.

]]> Another way is to strip out unneeded languages from various applications.

Some users have reported applications loading in almost half the time.

Some examples of space savings are:

* BBEdit 8.5, from 33.6Mb to 23.5Mb (30%)
* GarageBand 3.0.4, from 103Mb to 30.4Mb (70%)
* Grapher 2.0, from 68.2Mb to 18.6Mb (72%)
* Google Earth 4, from 101Mb to 52.8Mb (47%)

Xslimmer is compatible all the way from Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) through 10.5.x (Leopard).

You can use the demo for free to save up to 50 Mb of space. After that it is only $12.99. Of course, there are free apps that will do some slimming features, but this is the first one I have seen that removes languages from applications.

Top 40 Most Useful Mac Freeware tag:www.ugnn.com,2008://1.1304 2008-04-30T02:35:50Z 2008-04-30T03:05:28Z This list is not only longer than any of the others, but has a number of programs that didn't know about. Lynn Wegley http://www.ugnn.com/ This list is not only longer than any of the others, but has a number of programs that didn't know about.

]]> Here are some of the ones on the list:

1. Apple Boot Camp
2. AppleJack - AppleJack is a user friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X.
With AppleJack you can troubleshoot a computer even if you can’t load the GUI,
or don’t have a startup CD handy. AppleJack runs in Single User Mode and is
menu-based for ease of use.
3. Burn
4. Butler
5. Chicken of the VNC
6. Carbon Copy Cloner ...
11. iGetter
12. ImageWell (no longer free after 7 days.)
13. iWebMore - This lets you easily and quickly add features to sites created in iWeb
that would be difficult to add without this utility. This is the dig for the iWeb
developer. Embed HTML in your iWeb pages and finally have those flash
animations, applets and google ads on the website.
16. MainMenu
18. MenuMeters
21. Perian - With Perian, the Swiss Army Knife for QuickTime, any OS X application
that uses QuickTime can now use all the other common media types like DivX,
XviD, mpeg4, AC3 audio, etc.
23. Service Scrubber
25. Sizzling Keys - Sizzling keys allows you to control iTunes with keyboard shortcuts from any application. Pause, adjust the volume or skip a track without leaving the current application. Far more efficient than using iTunes itself. As well, one is generally using a lot more keyboard shortcuts when on the go anyhow.

28. SMARTReporter - SMARTReporter is an application that can warn you of some ATA
hard disk failures before they actually happen! It does so by periodically polling
the S.M.A.R.T.-status of your hard disk. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and
Reporting Technology) is a technology built into most modern hard disks that
acts as an “early warning system” for pending drive problems.
30. Springy (StuffIt replacement) ...

There is more of course, plus some descriptors. As I mentioned above not all of the programs are freeware.

See it here.
