Harvard and MIT launch edX

What is edX you ask.  It is a new service that Harvard and MIT are doing to offer FREE online classes.  The program will be run by a non-profit organization controlled by the two schools and they have each committed $30 million to the program.

The courses will be announced this summer and will be provided in the fall.  University credit will not be offered, but there will be exams and other ways to assess progress.  There will be certificates available for a modest fee to students to show their mastery of the material.

This follows the schools involvement in iTunes University and a pilot program last spring.

There are more details in the article including links to similar programs called Corsera and Udacity that preceded this program.
