Apple Soars to Third Place in US PC Market
Research firms Gartner and IDC today released their preliminary quarterly personal computer shipment data, offering up a picture of market performance during the second quarter of 2011. Overall, the PC industry exhibited small growth on a worldwide scale, with unit shipments growing by about 2.5% between the second quarters of 2010 and 2011.
But shipments in the U.S. actually declined year-over-year by about 4-6% according to the two firms. Gartner in particular points to the iPad as having had a detrimental effect on PC shipments for the quarter.

ITC says HTC violating two of Apple’s patents
Apple scored a legal victory today when the U.S. International Trade Commission made an initial ruling that HTC had violated two of its patents.
The ITC administrative law judge’s initial determination was that HTC infringed on two of the 10 patents Apple had filed a complaint over in March 2010, according to an HTC statement. The ITC still needs to make a final ruling on the complaint. A loss carries the threat that HTC’s products would be banned from coming into the U.S., and Apple only needs to get a favorable decision on one of the patents.

Computer ‘maniac’ to sue Apple over phone privacy
A SOUTH Korean lawyer who is an avid user of the iPhone is waging a legal privacy battle against Apple Computer over the device’s tracking capabilities.
Kim Hyeong-seok said he has persuaded at least 17,000 people in South Korea to join him in a class-action lawsuit he plans to file against the company in a court in Seoul next month.

Apple orders 25M iPhone 5 units
Apple Inc. has ordered 25 million units of its next generation iPhone — possibly the much-rumored iPhone 5 — by the end of the year, according to a report.
The Wall Street Journal cites sources as saying Apple has placed that many orders with its component makers, and is expecting to have first units delivered in August.

Apple Readies New iPhone
Apple Inc. is getting closer to launching its next iPhone, as it works to stay ahead of competition from smartphone rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co.
Apple has ordered key components for a new iPhone it is aiming to launch by the end of September, said people familiar with the situation. These people said the new iPhone is expected to be similar to the current iPhone 4, but thinner and lighter with an improved eight-megapixel camera.
