Paper Phone

After iPhone, Here’s The PaperPhone

If you thought that the iPhone was the game-changer, here’s something to prove you are wrong.
A bunch of Canadian researchers have invented a a smartphone prototype which is paper-thin, flexible and has a low-powered e-ink touchscreen display (Amazon’s Kindle also uses an e-Ink display). The phone can be rolled up to fit into your pocket. ( PICTURE )

iPhone 5 watch

iOS 4.3.3 is here, but it’s still a matter of hurry up and wait. It’s all happening fast now leading up to the iPhone 5 release, and Apple’s plans for it are becoming more clear by its actions. After an entire winter of no iOS updates and no product releases which made it feel as if Apple had simply switched the lights off, the company has re-emerged with a vengeance.
Sadly for those who were counting on it, that aggression doesn’t appear to include a summer iPhone 5. But here’s the good news: with all the fuss Apple has been showing regarding the iPhone in the past month and a half, it’s clear that Apple is stepping on the gas pedal in ways not previously seen.

Google, Apple Keep Gobbling Smartphone Share

Google’s Android smartphone share rose to 34.7 percent in March, up from 33 percent in February, according to new comScore mobile subscriber stats released May 6.
Google is expected to make some significant announcements regarding its Android platform May 10 at its Google I/O developer show. Apple’s iPhone share ticked up to 25.5 percent from 25.2 percent over the same period, suggesting that the Verizon iPhone 4 is continuing to attract some buyers.

Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me find a projector for my iPhone

A reader, ‘Bob’ writes to Aunt TUAW (Erica Sadun) in yesterday’s TUAW :
I sometimes watch TV in my bedroom on my iPhone (3GS) via EyeTV before I go to sleep. The screen is, of course, a bit small and not ideally positioned for a relaxed posture in bed. What’s your idea on pico projectors in combination with an iPhone (3GS)?

Nuance Deal Could Be Game Changer for Apple’s iOS 5

Rumor has it that Apple is engaged in serious negotiations with Nuance. A potential deal between Apple and Nuance suggests that Apple is aggressively pursuing new voice recognition capabilities for iOS 5.
According to TechCrunch, although Apple is swimming in cash and could purchase Nuance outright, it would be an expensive acquisition and a possible licensing and patent nightmare due to the agreements Nuance already has in place. What is more likely is that Apple is working to engage Nuance in a partnership, or a significant licensing deal that will let Apple incorporate the Nuance voice recognition features into the core of iOS 5.

Budget smartphone braves odds

Just when you thought it was safe to go phone shopping, yet another enters the frey …
Nokia’s C5-03 may be likened to a football goalkeeper standing resolutely firm amid hordes of frenzied and determined attackers. With the unprecedented demand for the iOS-powered iPhones, the ever-increasing popularity of Android-powered smartphones, and more significantly, Nokia’s recent announcement to use Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Phone 7 operating system as the foundation for the Finnish giant’s upcoming mobile phones, we may now be looking at one of the few remaining standard-bearers of the Symbian OS.

Now, to Find a Parking Spot, Drivers Look on Their Phones

It is the urban driver’s most agonizing everyday experience: the search for an empty parking place. It is part sleuthing and part blood sport. Circling, narrowly missing a spot, outmaneuvering other motorists to finally ease into a space only to discover that it is off limits during working hours.
Now San Francisco professes to have found a solution — a phone app for spot-seekers that displays information about areas with available spaces.
