Fake White House holiday e-mail is cyber attack

It looked like an innocent e-mail Christmas card from the White House. But the holiday greeting that surfaced just before Christmas was a ruse by cybercriminals to steal documents and other data from law enforcement, military and government workers — particularly those involved in computer crime investigations.
      Analysts who have studied the malicious software said Tuesday that hackers were able to use the e-mail to collect sensitive law enforcement data. But so far there has been no evidence that any classified information was compromised.

Most Malicious Programs of 2010

Trend Micro the security company has disclosed the most widespread malicious programs of 2010, with the company’s list including the Zeus, Stuxnet and Koobface, among others.
      Reports Trend Micro through its blog dated December 29, 2010 that Senior Threat Researcher David Sancho indicated that with 2010 approaching its end, he thought that he’d recapitulate the malware trends which inflicted the year.

New Android Malware Is Similar To Botnet

The Chinese users of Google’s Android Mobile Operating systems are been repeatedly cautioned about a malware. The security specialists claim that a recently revealed malware is marking all the Chinese users of Google’s Android mobile operating system. This specific kind of malware is said to have many similarities with ‘botnet’ which might be able to hijack control of an Android phone.
      According to the Associated Press, a research company based in San Francisco, Calif. revealed the hidden malware in response to user’s post on a forum. The research company calls the malware ‘the most sophisticated Android malware we’ve seen to date’. It is also said to be the first one to show botnet-like capabilities in the wild.

Global Spam Volume on the Decline

Hey, here’s some good news: it looks like spam is on the decline. According to Symantec’s latest State of Spam and Phishing report, the volume of spam and junk mail in circulation around the world has been decreasing steadily since August, and dropped noticeably around Christmas.
      No one has a concrete explanation for the drop-off, but Symantec’s Eric Park suggests that the demise of major botnets may have played a role.

iPhone users most vulnerable to phishing attacks, BlackBerry users the most resilient

In sad and lamentable news, it turns out that mobile users are three times more likely than desktop users to give up their personal details to phishing websites.
      Even worse, despite only making up 26% of the US smartphone market, 65% of successful attacks are on iPhone users. Android, with 24% of the market represents only 9% of phishing attacks — but BlackBerry comes on top, with 36% of the market and only 8% of all successful phishing attempts.
