Use Gmail to make VoIP calls

Jessica Dolcourtse, wrote a hands-on review of Google’s new voice service. She talks about last week’s Google rollout of a new program that allows you to add voice to Gmails built-in Google Talk. Is uses a plugin that lets you use a dial pad so you can launch VoIP calls from the Gmail.com in-box, or from within iGoogle. Of course, it is currently only to U.S. Gmail users.

Jessica tested in on a Windows desktop and laptop as well as a Mac laptop. The “Call phone” button is in the Google Talk sidebar just under your name and status bar. The first time you click on the button, Google Talk’s VoIP service will prompt you to install the Google Talk voice and video plugin before you can begin dialing.

To make outbound calls, just type the digits. You can also type in a contact’s name to get their number to come up.
They were able to link our Google Voice account to their Gmail account. That made it possible to receive and answer inbound calls from a Google Voice number. You will need a Google Voice account to pay for International calls.

It sounds to me that this is the perfect accompaniment to Google Voice. I have had it for some time and even had an article here about its original title “Grand Central.”
