AT&T to Tether iPhone

The MacObserver among others have reported that last Wednesday, AT&T announced that tethering will finally come to the iPhone with the 4.0 OS ships.

However, the big surprise was that the unlimited data plans will no longer be available for new subscribers starting June 7th. Instead, there will be two levels of data plans available.

There a 200 MB plan for $15 per month. However, the tethering which costs cost an additional $20 per month will only be available to those on the 2 Gigabyte plan at $25 per month. These data plans will also apply to the iPad.

Subscribers currently on the $30 a month unlimited data plan will stay on that plan even when upgrading to new hardware. Of course, according to AT&T 98%of the subscribers never get near the 2GB levels. I personally wonder though if AT&T isn’t changing the plans with the idea being that with the iPad there will be more streaming media consumed and thus higher levels of usage.

If subscribers that climb over their limits an additional identical amount will be billed.
