New Decade of Games

Kicking off a new decade is a plethora of games aimed at the iPhone and iPod Touch marketplace — some good, some not so good.

These all look like pretty good bets for at least some form of entertainment. Most however are basically re-hashed versions of older games that may have been your favorite on the desktop. Some have been designed specifically for the iPhone interface.

AstroZapper and Hubble Space

* AstroZapper 2.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch users has incorporated real Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra X-Ray Telescope, and other NASA source images into the app to add a heightened sense of realism and fun.
      It’s the classic asteriods space game we’ve seen again and again since the original back in the 1980s. Zap dangerous, oncoming asteroids in space. Users have a choice of three different ships to use, all of which have weapons to blast away the danger and avoid getting hit.

80s Songs inspire word game

* What makes 80s Scramble, an addictive word game for the iPhone and iPod touch is its use of song titles from all the greatest 80s hits.
      First, the player picks a year from the 80s. A song title then appears with all letters missing except for the first letter of each word. The player taps or flicks the letters to fill in the missing letters of the song titles. Once the title is complete, the user can click a link to preview or purchase the song on iTunes.

A Doodle Fly

* Doodle Fly 2.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch users lets you draw or import your own character to fly to the moon.
      The mission of the game is to reach the moon and find out if the moon rabbit really exists, as claimed by the Ancient Chinese. Developers have loaded the game with a ready arsenal of propeller beanies, springboards, rockets, planes and clouds to help users move about in the sky and accomplish their mission.

Surf the Music

* Yet another music oriented game created specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
      Players generate their own funky soundtracks by gathering bits of funk to trigger music loops and audio accents. Different versions of the soundtrack can be created providing a unique and fresh audio experience. Intuitive tilt controls and simple to pick up game play will provide hours of fun for casual and seasoned players alike.

Prairie Chute Arrives Safely

* Prairie Chute 1.5 is a “pick up and play” casual game for iPhone and iPod touch. Prairie Chute features a parachuting prairie dog that you must safely guide to the right hole.
      Its starts off fairly easy, but after a few rounds buzzards, coyotes, land mines and electric fences will try to impede your progress. You can collect floating stars along the way to earn extra lives and unlock over 20 different achievements to earn the “Top Dog” ranking which gives the player a special Elvis skydiving suit!

Imagine the Scale

* Imagine the Scale for iPhone and iPod touch takes you on a journey through the relative size of things in our universe. One can zoom in from the dimension of one billion light years to the realm of the atom.
      While not very useful — and educational value is limited it is a unique experience. The overall style and design of the application focusses on the experience of a beautiful and relaxing flight through the displayed objects accompanied by a soothing piano background music.

Mahjong Wall

* Russell Wilson created the original Mah Jongg Wall as shareware for desktop computers in the late 1990′s — this new one was designed for the iPhone for shorter periods of cell phone play while still offering more mystery, strategy, and challenge than other mahjong tile games.
      Gameplay includes building the Great Wall by removing matching free pairs of tiles, changing Season tiles and using Special Moves to free blocked tiles, and completing the Wall by deducing the Joker’s mystery partner.
