WineBottler

Of course some of us can’t really understand why any one would want to run Windows applications on their Macs, but some do.

There are ready several options to do that. First from Apple, Boot Camp Assistant which lets you determine which operating system you want to launch at startup.

Then there is Parallels. from Parallel, Inc. and Fusion from VM Ware. Similar in concept, but there are difference. Each of these though, allow us to run Windows in a Mac window.

Another option is CrossOver. CrossOver from CodeWarrior provide Windows API “hooks” that allow specific Windows appication to run in Mac OS X as if it was a native application.

For along time, there has been an open source application similar to CrossOver called Wine. To me it appears pretty geeky, but does work.

Now here is an application that will help install Wine. WineBottler is in beta and requires an Intel Mac, as does all the programs listed above.

If you have a computer that you can experiment on, it should be fun. Just don’t do it on a machine you need to be stable.

Check it out here.
