Long ago, I recommended Download.com for Mac software downloads. But I quickly changed to VersionTracker and MacUpdate as a great way to find new files and keep them up to date. (Both can send email to you telling you of updates to particular programs.)
More recently I have suggested going to Apple.com to find software as well. Apple does keep a pretty extensive list.
Now I have found another site. The URL is harder to remember but they seem to group things nicely. It is

Some of the categories are: AntiVirus, Audio, Business & Finnace, Desktop Enhancement & Fonts, Desktop Publishing, E-mail & Chat, Games, Internet and more. (113 pages of freeware games.)
Also there are sections for iPod and iPhone apps.
