According to Ars Tecnica, the Apple Newton wasn’t going to be able to handle dates after this year. But it has now been updated by a third party to allow it to continue on for a long time.
“The problem for the Newton is that the date was encoded using only 30 bits instead of a full 32 bits, meaning that disaster would strike when the clock struck 6:48:31pm on January 5, 2010.”
Hopefully such obsolesce isn’t built into todays computers and phones
