Apple: 1 billion apps served

Yes, it’s another race — to be the buyer of the one-billionth iPhone app at iTunes. We remember the flurry of festivities surrounding the sale of the one-millionth tune from iTunes. This time the lucky winner takes nearly $13,000 in Apple gear just for purchasing a 2-dollar app. Currently, they’re selling at a rate of : 6,000 every minute, 360,000 every hour and 8.6 million a day.

Cnet’s Tom Krazit reports:

Apple is approaching the 1 billion mark for applications downloaded from the App Store, and plans to give out a host of Apple gear to the lucky billionth customer.
The company put up a countdown Web page Friday as it gets closer to the mark: as of this writing, about 928 million applications have been downloaded from the App Store since it went live last July, according to the counter.

The anticipated date is not far off. Apple expects they’ll reach the goal in the next few days — maybe even before you get this article. Krazit continues…

Whoever manages to download the 1 billionth application will come away with a pretty good haul: a MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod Touch, a Time Capsule, and a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate.

Somewhere north of 30,000 applications have made their way onto the App Store to fuel those 1 billion downloads. Along with the promotion, Apple released some stats on the top downloads in both the paid and free categories: Facebook has been downloaded the most times among the free applications, while Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D has received the most downloads among paid applications.

Apple Starts Countdown To 1 Billion Apps

Washington Post reporter Tricia Duryee writes:

This morning, the count stands at 929 million applications, which is moving so quickly, it could hit 1 billion within 10 days. From the looks of it, about 100 apps are being added every second — that’s 6,000 every minute, 360,000 every hour and 8.6 million a day. It’s no wonder that I get at least four application press releases a day (and explains why we really can’t write about them all). Everyone knew that thousands of applications were launching every month, but this visual really puts it into context. I’m sure every mobile platform is envious of this pace.
