Airport Extreme gets dual-band Wi-Fi

Michael DeAgonia wrote this review for ComputerWorld. What I find amazing is that I didn’t know that Airport Extreme had Dual-Band Wi-Fi. And that I didn’t even know what that meant for sure.

“The newest Airport Extreme base station, … retains its flat, white Mac mini-like look; the same $179 price tag; and the ability to broadcast using the 802.11a/b/g/n protocols on the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz frequencies. You can still share printers or external USB hard drives,… “

What the dual-band does for you is allow some devices to connect at “g” speeds while not slowing down the ones that connect at “n”.

For example, in the past if you connected to the Wi-Fi with an iPhone, the whole network would slow down to “g” because that is the best that the iPhone can support. Now you can still run the computers on the network at “n” speeds if they support it
