How often do you visit other MUGs or PCUGs web sites? I was thinking today about groups that I have been with in the past as well as the ones I still have an association.
Because of my part time work, I don’t make it to many meetings, but I belong to the Apple Corp of Dallas which meets once a month at the Richardson Civic Center.
They have Dr. Mac, Bob Levitus coming up from Austin for their April 11th. They ARE running an iPhone SIG that I asked about earlier.
TUMS, The Tulsa Users of Macintosh Society, where I am a lifetime member has a Photoshop presentation at their April 14th meeting. Unfortunately, they meet the same night as my Cowtown MUG session and over 250 miles away. I do find it interesting that they are still running an Apple Seeds session for 30 minutes before the main meeting. I started that back in ’95 as a way to address the new users in the group. It is always good when “a plan comes together.”
Cowtown is the group where I am most active. While CowtownMUGhas had difficulties in getting regular meeting space since last summer, that issue has now settled down. Additionally one of the founders has returned to active status and there is a core of members that are actively working to rebuild the group.
From there, the Boston Computer Society and the Berkley MUG are no longer around as their old presence. But they are around in other incarnations.
Apple Fritter has publish several of the BCS public domain floppies. (Both BCS and BMUG had an extensive collection of disks.)
Wikipedia has a good history of the BCS. The BMUG one is here.
Old BCS members are running the Boston MUG and Berkley MUG has Planet MUG.
Additionally the old sysops of the BCS “Rumor Manager” BBS has Virtual HarborVirtual Harbor as an on line service.
I started thinking of this topic while looking at the Washington Apple Pi web site.
My friend Lesa Snyder King is appearing there as I write this. It seems to be a favorite group for her, having appeared there several times in the past. She is the author of “The Missing Manual for Photoshop.” At least the most recent edition.
I am going to end this now, since I have been a member of around 20 different groups in the past. Several via mail and several that aren’t around any more, I could go on and may in future articles. The main point is look and see what other groups are doing.
