App Guide for Switchers

Apple says that over 50% of the people who purchase a Mac at the Apple Store, did not own a Mac when they entered. Therefore, we are seeing a number of web sites that try to be a guide for switchers.

Tao of Mac has had a number of good articles over the years. In this case it is a guide to applications for switchers.

Most of the applications listed are freeware, but he does mention a few commercial products as well.

The list format is with the Windows application (or process) and then the appropriate Mac OS X replacement.

For example, for audio editing, he mentions GarageBand which comes with the Macintosh, but also recommends Audacity as an app to grab.

For File Transfer (FTP and SFTP), he recommends Cyberduck, Fugu and Transmit.

For BitTorrent, Transmission.

For Notepad, he says “This one depends on what you really need a text editor for: TextEdit is built in, and works fine, BBEdit has a legion of followers, TextMate is probably the most sophisticated programmers’ editor out there, and VoodooPad will do a lot more than just text editing.”

So as you can see, the “list” also has some explanation.
