The UK government is giving 20,000 disadvantaged kids in Suffolk and Oldham free PCs. The ‘Next Generation Learning’ plan aims to spend £300m on children 7 to 18 years of age. Besides the purchase of a PC, there will be software purchased and one year of broadband access along with three years of technical help.
In order to qualify, the family must make less than £15,500 per year or be on Income Support.
The Schools Minister Jim Knight has asked tech companies to offer cheap PC and software deals to all pupils aged seven to 18 in the two pilot areas.
