Must Have Menu Bar Applications

The guy who writes this"Mac Tips and Tricks" blog, previously did Top 100 Mac Applications and Top 50 Terminal Commands. He has 45 of these menu bar applications listed. Most of which are completely new to me.

The web site linked below has more details about these as well as links to the apps.

The list:

1) Bokeh - Frees up cpu cycles by freezing applications.
2) Breakaway - Mutes and disable your speakers/iTunes and audio jack when unplugging or plugging in headphones.
3) Caffeine - Keeps the computer from going to sleep.
4) Camouflage - Hides clutter on the desktop
5) Check Off - To do list
6) Coconut Wifi - Designed to give more information about available Wi-Fi
7) Countdown Clock - What it says
8) Digg Update - Keeps up date about Digg
9) Ejector - Ejects CD/DVD
10) Expandrive - Access to remote server

Some others:
12) FuzzyClock
14) Gmail Notifier
17) iAlertU - Sets off alarm if MacBook is moved.
27) MUmenu - Links to MacUpdate to notify updates to applications available there.

As I said there are several more on the site and as usual commenters offer some new ones and some alternatives.

Of course, you should explore the site as well.
