Sunday, April 27th marks Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. On this unique day, people around the globe will be taking time off from the increasingly te chnological world we live in and share the unusual beauty of this time-honored photographic process.
Similar to photography as we know it, pinhole photography differs in that the camera has no lens. Instead, it has a very small aperture (a pinhole) which projects an image on film or paper. As far back as 500 B.C., the Greeks were creating rudimentary pinhole cameras using slits in wicker baskets and the crossing of leaves.
Today, children of all ages can create their own pinhole camera with common household items. All that is needed is a light-tight container (such as an oatmeal box or can), a sewing needle to make the pinhole, a piece of film or photographic paper, scissors, tape, a piece of cardboard, and an active imagination.
