I first came across the issue of port forwarding when I was still somewhat active on AOL and tried to use AOL's client for MacOS X. I couldn't get the client to connect via my router.
It required that I change the port being used by AOL on my router. There are other programs and uses that also need to be changed. This web site offers advice on how to do it.
They do offer a utility for Windows that does the configuration automatically. But the manual instructions are not that difficult for those of us who have been around awhile. It might not be for the newer users.
