Software for starving students.
I just came across this web site that aims to keep the cost of software for students to an economic level. The list here is a little dated as it was put out in September 2007, but it seems to have a lot of good software and you can update with current versions using VersionTracker for either platform and/or MacUpdate for Macs.
The site provides a premade CD for download as well as images for labeling the disk and the case.

There is an great many of these on either platform with which I am unfamiliar, but I am looking forward to trying those out.
