Response from Web2 Delight

As we noted earlier, we had some concerns about the parental controls not being completely effective on this site. I was able to get a response from them that unfortunately was buried in my "Junk" folder until I went through it this afternoon. It was actually emailed to me on March 12th.

It would appear that they are trying to cover this subject, but user should be aware of the issue. The response follows:

Hi Lynn

Thanks for forwarding us the mail citing concern attributable to porn contents displayed by Web2 Delight

This concern has been foremost on our minds since the early days of Web2 Delight. We had contemplated how we can avoid displaying such content, when parental controls are turned on within our application. We feel by providing and including the parent control option in the application, we have shown that we are earnest in addressing the issue from our end. The major hurdle that we faced in implementing this option in a fool-proof manner was due to the lack of API support from some of these sites in filtering off such contents. Web2 Delight acts as 'portal' for all these video and image sharing sites. We are heavily dependent on what APIs these sites provide us, that content they supply to us, etc. So the chances are, if these sites do not do a good job of removal or categorization of objectionable content from
their sites, we are kind of limited in our ability to do much about the same. It is for this reason, we provided our own 'Mark as Rated' option from within our software for an adult to mark such content from his side..

The sites will be bound to provide API to recognize content that are inappropriate for general viewing at some time. At least the popular sites seem earnest in doing so. YouTube and MetaCafe have their own provisions to do it.

YouTube has made it a process to remove explicit content from the site. MetaCafe too has a separate provision for it. Now to BlipTV. The API's provided do have an option to turn off explicit content. And we have set the flag to 'No' , indicating the server to filter out explicit contents. However as it seems now, it does not work.

YouTube is moving in this direction of marking rated content as such (with a'' tag) As far as other sites are concerned, we have pretty frugal support from some of them. The kind of issue that we are facing now with them, would greatly depend on the support from the sites.

Moving forward, if this continues, we may be forced to think on the inclusion of newer, more popular sites and the exclusion of some of the existing ones.

Thanks once again for writing to us. Rest assured that we would reviewing this situation from time to time and doing all we can from our side to make Web2 Delight a great companion application for the home user.
