Privacy concerns and Google

What does Google know about you? Well, that just depends on how much you use Google. Google is now being accused of eroding privacy…

Is Google building a dossier on you?

If you use Google only for searching, then they know what you search for, when, etc. Most people use Google Search, and Google Maps. Both of these are fairly tame.

If you search maps, then businesses, they know what you are looking for in that geographic area. Many, many people also use Google Calendars. Add that to Maps, and you have a dossier on what, when and why you are doing things.

Any time you subscribe to something via Google, then your dossier adds things you are most interested in. Many people use these services along with Groups, Mail, Earth, etc. Now, Google can build a fairly sophisticated dossier about you.

How long will it be before this power is abused, or stolen?

Joe Showker, our “Safe Netting” correspondent sent this one in. He also cites Master Plan “Google masters the planet” … “Google now rules the world wide web.”

Joe says:

> I’m getting this more an more from server administrators
> and consumer advocates. Spend a little time around this
> page if you want to have an entirely new mindset on
> your google mail and other services.
