Get To Your Mac From the Road

LifeHacker has presented this article as an alternative to "Back To Your Mac." Of course, "Back To Your Mac" is a feature of Leopard that requires a dotMac account. But any long time Mac user can tell you that there are a number of alternatives that while more difficult and not as feature rich available.

The author says: "Right now I'm working from my laptop in Austin, and I've got the same full access to my home PC in Los Angeles as Back to My Mac offers, but I didn't spend a dime on .Mac to get it. That's because all of the tools you need to roll your own Back to My Mac are already built into Leopard for free out of the box—you just need to know how to access them."

He goes on to discuss VNC and how to use Leopard's Sharing preferences to to allow a setup for an FTP server and enabling remote screen sharing.

Of course he also sets it up for only certain access by assigned user. He goes on to complete the action complete with some other optional steps including port forwarding on the router.

He then tells what you need to do on the remote computer.

He ends the original article by asking the readers to give other alternatives. The readers have complied, which he adds to the bottom of the article but you are best off reading the comments themselves as they contain links to better descriptions.

He also promises a future article aimed at PC users.
