Campfire chat
Campfire Chat is just that, the ability to chat on the Internet. You can sign up on their web site and then conduct chats privately over the net. It is aimed at businesses primarily, but there is a free account.
You can have a Premium account for $99 per month that will allow up to 100 people chatting at once with up to 25 Gigs of file space.
The Free account only allows 4 chatters at once. That account only allows 10 MB of file space. That should be enough to satisfy most individual uses who want to chat with a few family or friends and most of the time doesn't chat with more than one other person.
The big news here is that it has been optimized for the iPhone. So you can use this instead of SMS messages. Of course one limitation is that each person has to go to Campfire to do the chatting, but you can send a single SMS message telling the other person where to meet.
