"The CPU that Intel built just for Apple"
In this article by Jon Peddie, it is pointed out that Intel got its start making custom chips for its customers. Thus it isn't too surprising that Apple was able to get a low power, powerful chip from Intel on an exclusive basis for its new MacBook Air.
The article covers a lot of Intel history that I didn't know. But then my primary concern in the computer world was with its competitors chips, the 6502 and the 68000 series processors.
The article points out that the original 4004 and the 8008 chips were also built as custom chips for customers. And that Intel often gives an exclusive for a period of time to its original customer. In this case, Apple has about a 9 month exclusive. So that by this time next year we will see portables from other manufacturers and Apple will be on to its next innovation.
