MacWorld Expo Tips

There have been 40-45 MacWorld Expos held in the United States. I have attended 3 Apple Fests prior the the Mac being introduced and nearly one half of the Expos. So, I got to thinking back to what I would have done differently and what would make it a better experience.

First, the thing is getting there, which is probably to late to do for the 2008 Expo.
Make your plans early to save money on airfare and on hotel expenses. Airfare of course needs to be handled weeks if not months in advance. It is also advisable to avoid connecting in Chicago, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis or Denver due to possible weather problems. But even Dallas and Houston can have problems so avoid them also if you can get a direct flight.

Of course, you want to be as close to Moscone as possible. But the Marriott and the W are pretty expensive. One way to save money if you are really interested is in getting space at the local Hostel. A bed in San Francisco will cost $20 to less than $35 a night during the Expo time this year. You can also check the International Youth Hostel for other options.

If you are going to be using public transportation while in the area, check into a pass on the Cable cars, but unfortunately, BART doesn't offer weekly passes.

(BTW - it is more fun to come as a group, so try to travel with other user group members).

While at the Expo attend as many events as possible. Check with the Hess Memorial Event List to make your plans while you are still at home. Some of these event require advanced registration such as UGU or this year's UG Wine and Cheese Reception.

A few more things to remember for the show itself.
1) An umbrella - San Francisco is often wet in January
2) Comfortable shoes - both in Moscone and out you will be doing a lot of walking.
3) Bring business cards to hand to vendors. Maybe you can get material sent to you rather than carrying it home.
4) A shoulder bag to carry water, guide and other things.
5) A power strip, especially if you are bringing a MacBook.
6) For a quick inexpensive snack in Moscone, I used to use the vending machines near the conference area. Of course, the User Group Lounge is a great place to rest and see great speakers. See Schedule
7) Use the MacWorld Expo program to plan who you want to see.
8) Of course, attend the User Group events.
9) Just like you get more out of your group by volunteering, you will get more out of Expo by volunteering for MUG events. Send Sandy an email if you want to volunteer for the Wine & Cheese Reception, Expo Guides or the MUG Lounge at mwvolunteers @ mac.com (remove the spaces). Or you can ask her what is available.

Have fun!!! Hope to be there next year.
