Taiwan based maker of PCs earlier this week announced that it has agreed to acquire Gateway for Gateway for $US710 million.
Until recently, Gateway was the #3 PC maker in the U.S. But they also have first rights to purchase Packard Bell which has a larger presence in Europe. Those sales combined with what it already had for its namesake brand should give it 3rd place in the world.
In the US, the move gives Acer access to Best Buy and Circuit City.
I remember Acer’s Green computers from the mid ’90s when I had a part time job at Computer City. I wasn’t to impressed with their quality then. I also believe that they acquired RadioShack’s personal computers before moving it to Taiwan.
It will be interesting to see how Acer manages the three brands.
