3G iPhone for Europe?

According to newswireless.net, Apple will announce on Monday July 2nd, that Vodafone, T-Mobile of Germany and Carphone Warehouse will be the carriers for various parts of Europe.

The new phones will also have 3G Internet connections.
What surprises me is that they claim that the US version has been slammed for "its poor performance as a phone."

That is something I haven't heard. Though I have heard complaints about the speed of the Edge network.
