Microsoft Silverlight
I find two things hard to believe about this one. First that we need another competitor to Flash, Quicktime, etc. The second surprise for me is that this is part of .NET.
I hadn't heard anything new about .Net in a couple of years and thought that MS had abandoned it.
Here is what Microsoft says about it:

* Enhance existing standards/AJAX-based applications with richer graphics and media and improve their performance and capabilities by using Silverlight.
What do ya'll think of it? I have downloaded it from here. But haven't restarted my browser to try it out.
