Media companies sent Cease and Desist
Media Rights Technologies and BlueBeat.com sent Cease and Desist to Microsoft, Apple, Adobe and Real Networks.
The first paragraph of the press release: "The Digital Millennium
Copyright Act (DMCA) was signed into law by President Clinton in 1998 to
disseminate and protect the arts in the digital age. It makes illegal and
prohibits the manufacture of any product or technology that is designed for
the purpose of circumventing a technological measure which effectively
controls access to a copyrighted work or which protects the rights of
copyright owners. Under the DMCA, mere avoidance of an effective copyright
protection solution is a violation of the act."
It sounds to me like they are saying that because the companies aren't using Media Right Technoogies copy protection they are in violation of the DMCA. Somehow this sounds lke a fishing expedition to me. This notice does apply to streaming video and music only. So it could be legitimate since none of these companies seem to worry to much about this protection. But then I don't see how anyone can stop the recording of audio via the speaker port.
