iPod Fully Loaded

I first met Andy Ihnatko during my two years as an Activist with the Boston Computer Society in the mid 80s. Andy really was a spring chicken in those days. "iPod Fully Loaded" is not meant to be a complete book on the secrets of iPod.

coverIt is to be a step by step book on how to get things into your iPod. Of course there are chapters on putting music from LPs and Tapes as well as the easier CDs. From that he moves on to videotape, DVS and other video. Most of us do those types of things via iTunes.

Part II continues on to Podcasts, streaming audio and then grabbing video from the Internet. He even talks about how to getting free music from the web. This section finishes up with how to put web pages as text into the iPod. Of course this involves the issue of limited text file size.

Part 3 moves on to bringing in contacts, appointments, to-do lists and photos. These are synced to the iPod from the computer using iTunes. Then Andy tells you how to put e-mail, spreadsheets, databases, presentatons, maps, and backing up files.

Appendix A tells how to automate these processes in Mac OS X while Appendix B talks about text to speech for Windows and Mac.

Andy does all this with his normal sense of humor. For example: "Generally speaking, AAC files sound better than MP3 files. "Quality" is a subjective experience, and a lot of people obsess about it needlessl. Do keep in mind that there are wonks out there who absolutely insist that they can hear the difference between an LP and a CD. And ultra-ultra-wontks who claim tha they can tell you what metal your speaker wires are made from.
"If you're at a part, you're meant to be dancing, not scutinizing the music for time resolution and scale factor artifacts. Any way, you can indeed make an MP3 that sounds as good as an AAC file, but it'll still probaby take up more space."

coverMuch of what is in the "iPod Fully Loaded", I already knew, but some other details made it well worth the read.
