Greatest Web Software Ever Written
The cover story of Information Week this week is about the 12 most important software in the 13 year history of the web. If you discount the web itself, that leaves 11.
Listed in reverse order of importance is Digg, Hotmail, World Of Warcraft, Wikipedia, XMLHttpRequest object set, Amazon.com, eBay, The Well, Craigslist, AltaVista
and Apache Server. What is interesting about the article is why each of these were picked. I am still not convinced about hotmail, but I think the author makes a good case for the other and even for why he left out some of the others. It also reminds us of important events in that history. Most of us don't even think about AltaVista any more.
