Teens admit to falsifying stats on MySpace

I came across an article in today's Fort Worth Star Telegram about the Pew internt & American Life Project. In it, it quotes online teens as saying they exagerate their content on Myspace or FaceBook. It seems that they feel if they put false info there it will throw off preditors. Two thirds of those interviewed said that they put their profiles and other data behind password protected doors that only people who have been given the password can access.

The FW article will probably be put behind a password protected door soon as usually the site keeps info available for only about 4 days for free.

Meanwhile, on SearchViews.com, it was pointed out that the recent Virginia Tech incident was followed up by news reports that used material from MySpace and FaceBook to look at some of the victims. It pointed out that the teens themselves expect exaggeration to be going on, but apparently the "outsiders" on the networks don't understand that.

Also interesting was that the older teens in particular don't exaggerate as much as the younger ones.

At least some of them are learning.
