Firefox Gains, Safari Falls

Many of the news outlets are buzzing about the major leaps in popularity enjoyed by FireFox. While I've actually become a true-blue Safari user (despite its failings) I also have FireFox installed for certain web sites that don't support Safari, and to check my own html against non-Safari browsers.

According to MarketShare's online survey,

Firefox is cross-platform, for Mac and Windows. That gives it the edge. Plus all those IE users jumping ship are likely switching to the Mozilla-based browser. (MarketShare)

Firefox's Phishing Protection helps safeguard your identity from theft by phishers and other online criminals. Approaching a "phishing site" or one that is a forgery, Firefox warns you and offers to assist in finding the real Web site you were looking for.

Firefox antiphishing better than IE 7

Here's another reason Firefox is probably gaining over both IE and Safari -- Safari doesn't do anything at all to protect users, IE does it, but does it poorly. Elizabeth Montalbano's report for IDG News Service points out many positive advantages of FireFox over IE. She points out:

> "When running in a mode with the antiphishing filter's auto-check turned off, IE 7 blocked 16 phishing sites for 1.54 percent accuracy, according to Mozilla's study. With auto-check turned on, IE 7 blocked 690 sites, with 66.35 percent accuracy. Further, there were 243 instances where Firefox blocked sites and IE did not, and 117 instances where IE blocked sites, but Firefox did not, the study found. There were 65 instances where neither browser's antiphishing filter blocked phishing URLs. [End Quote]

Bugzilla points out vulnerability

A vulnerability in Firefox's Phishing protection allows people that conduct phishing to fool Firefox into thinking that the site is secure where in fact it should have been marked a phishing site.
