Federal Income Taxes
Yes, it is that time of year again. I found it interesting that TurboTax is now including the Mac version on the same CD as the PC version.
That saves Intuit a lot of shipping and packaging costs without dropping support for the Mac. I applaud their effort here.
By contrast, H&R Block's Tax Cut dropped support for Mac.
The Tax Man Cometh
This year, I am working for one of the major tax service companies and a little more knowledgeable about what is out there. If you really want to do it cheap this year however, there are more limitations on the free services.
At IRS.gov, most of the listings require that income on the 1040 be below $52K. Many single people will fall under that, but a lot of couples will not. Of course, the major software and service firms have online options.
Last year, I used TurboTax, but have used some of the smaller firms in the past. If you do not have access to the Internet at home, most public libraries will provide you with a connection. Some also have Wi-Fi setups so you can bring your own notebook. The librarians will even help you answer questions about your return. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any free service for doing state income taxes.
Thank goodness we don’t have it in Texas.
