My iMac - IMHO
I have had more problems with my iMac than any Mac I have ever owned with the exception of the Fat Mac that I upgraded to a Plus.
As I remember it, in those days, it was common knowledge that the power supply of the Fat Mac wasn't capable of handling the upgrade. After I did the upgrade, I replaced each of the following 3 times: power supply, video card and floppy drive. Thank goodness they symptoms I experienced didn't show up when I took it to a Cambridge Apple dealer and he sold me Apple Care. So I was only out about $150 for all those repairs.
My current machine is a G5 iMac, purchased nearly 2 years ago. So far, I replaced the motherboard under warranty and it is currently in the shop for a power issue. I had read that Apple had extended the warranty on the power supply, so I figured that was the problem. However, I have been told that particular part I am replacing was not the one under that coverage.
Unfortunately I didn't get Apple Care this time. Nearly 20 years of nearly trouble free Macs have spoiled me. (But the iMac's speed has spoiled me from the Beige G3 I am using at the moment.)
Fred Comments: "Apple finally sent out our new iMac which had been plagued with woes across the 90-day warranty period. We did have Applecare, and after three logic boards, a power supply, two sets of new fans, and multiple firmware upgrades they decided to throw in the towel. We figured they had invested more in that machine with repairs than a new one would cost. "
BTW - www.hardin-computer.com Hardin Computer <> in Arlington , Texas is the company doing the work. They are one of the last independent dealers around here. They have done good work for me. If you are in the area, you should consider using them. Much quicker turn around time that that big super store with an Apple store in the corner and closer to Fort Worth than any of the stand alone Apple Stores.
You are advised to purchase Applecare on ANY new equipment you purchase.

The G5 iMacs have been very troublesome in my opinion too.
My day to day desktop unit at work has had two motherboards, a power supply and two harddrives - most of it (but not all of it) under warrantee - the unit is just over two years old.
I have to think they tried too hard to make that sleek box look pretty and didn't spend enough time making it robust.
