Second-Guessing Apple's Intel Switch
When I called and talked to an Apple rep about my daughter's 15" G4 Aluminum PowerBook catching fire, I also mentioned buying three new iMacs. He made some interesting comments...
"You may want to wait until after the first of the year"
... when I asked "why" he said "... you'll want the INTEL iMac instead."
So, we're looking for old Steve to unveil his new Macintosh PCs with the "Intel inside" logo at the Macworld Expo Keynote presentation on January 9.
However if a new 4-month old Apple PowerBook catches on fire -- perhaps we don't want to buy the bleeding edge Mactels after all. Maybe we'll buy the G5 iMac now on the shelves and wait a year or so on the Intels.
In an interview with CNET News, Freescale CEO, Michael Mayer, revealed that Apple was ready to switch to Intel processors five years ago. During negotiations, he convinced Apple to buy the G5 processor, and he convinced IBM to make it. Freescale manufactures processors for some Macintosh models.
Mr. Mayer commented
... "I've seen both sides of the Apple story, because I sold the G5 to Steve (Jobs) the first time he wanted to move to Intel."
Later, IBM decided not to pursue a laptop version of the G5, instead focusing on chips for game consoles like Microsoft's new Xbox 360.

Meanwhile, someone over at DigiTimes believes that MacIntel, or "Intel Inside" Macs won't hit the market until June 6 of next year.
The Digitimes article won't let you in unless you're a subscriber.
Over in the IT consultants camp, people seem to thing the Apple Intel-based Macs coming later than you think...
In this Mac Daily News article, Paul Murphy says:
"Quite a number of pundits have gone out and predicted the appearance of Intel based Powerbooks from Apple this January - but it isn't going to happen. In fact what I expect is either, or both, an Intel based Mini and/or some Intel based iBooks. Beyond that, however, Intel is just not going to happen for Apple next year - no Powerbooks, no iMacs, no Workstations, and no X-Serves,"
